They're a committed bunch in Cheadle Hulme and Cheadle. There's no doubting both areas have attracted some big names in recent years. Cheadle Hulme has Waitrose and Paul Heathcote's Olive Press chain. Cheadle's streets boast shops with the latest designs. But in both, there is a loyal band of groups and organisations who are dedicated to keeping the traditions of village life alive.

Cheadle Hulme Parish Hall Flower Society, who host an annual Show, celebrate their 50th anniversary this year. The first show was held in July 1960 because Parish Hall trustees wanted to mark the Golden Jubilee of the building. It was organised quickly over a matter of months and included two lines of trestles tables with classes in flowers, vegetables and cookery.

Today, the show takes place at the Parish Rooms and the hall is packed to bursting with flowers and produce. Around 700 entries from around 120 exhibitors, including from the Cheadle Hulme Allotment Society, compete for more than 20 trophies and cups. This year's event is on Saturday, September 5th.

Eddie Garrick, chairman, said: 'The show was only ever supposed to be a one-off but it's grown in popularity. It's a traditional show and a little piece of history and it's something we have to protect.
