Nantwich hosts model car auction

There were scenes of niche-collecting hysteria at Cheshire auctioneer Peter Wilson's Nantwich saleroom when one man's lifetime collection of Scalextric cars went under the hammer.

The north west collector, now living in Asia, purchased his first car in 1957, the year production of the British slot racing car started, when tinplate rather than plastic was used for the bodies.

He subsequently acquired large collections from other enthusiasts to the point where he owned many, if not most, of the rarest examples of the 2,000-car collection.

They included a green prototype Batmobile, one of only three known, sold with a section of track decorated with a Batmobile logo, for £480 and a Bugatti Type 59, the pinnacle of any Scalextric collection, which drew some of the most extensive bidding. Of the 40 - 50 original examples made, probably less than a dozen are known to have survived. There were two in the sale, this one (pictured) with the No 11 racing number selling for £2,600.
