2011 Cheshire Life Nursery Art Competition, Terra Nova School

Young artists from across Cheshire have been celebrated at a ceremony held at Terra Nova School near Jodrell Bank.

The awards were presented at the seventh annual Cheshire Life Nursery Art competition which aims to promote art among Cheshire's youngest artists. This year the theme was Aliens Love Underpants, based on the popular children’s book and a record 649 paintings from 23 nurseries were submitted for judging.

The judges were Crispin Harris, director of Jackson-Stops and Staff and artist Wendy Levy of the Wendy Levy Gallery in Didsbury.

Wendy said: ‘I was very pleased to see such a large number of wonderful paintings submitted for this competition. The work produced by these very young children was inspirational, imaginative and very refreshing. It was very difficult to choose the winners from such a large number of fantastic pieces of work. I would like to say well done to every one of them.’

The winners were presented with their awards at a fun-filled family morning, which included an Alien Trail treasure hunt, face painting, spacehopper races, a craft table and the presentation itself.

Terra Nova School headteacher Andrew Lewin said: ‘The children who came to the prizegiving had a wonderful time seeing their paintings displayed as well as having great fun with the activities before the presentation.’

The winners were

Best Overall Winner with a prize of £250, sponsored by Jackson-Stops and Staff, was awarded to Emily Domville from Chrysalis Day Nursery. Children from Chrysalis have done very well in the competition and Emily is third overall winner from that nursery in the last four years.

The Gordon Wilkinson Cup for the Most Promising Artist went to Isaac Richards from Poppies Red Cross Day Nursery.

The Best Age Two Prize of £150, sponsored by August Blake Development, went to Olivia Egerton-Brooks from Apples and Pears Day Nursery.

The Best Age Three Prize of £150, sponsored by Photolink Creative Group, went to Gemma Staples from Oaklands Dean Nursery.

The Best Age Four Prize of £150, sponsored by Terra Nova School, went to Joanna Tookey from Kids Unlimited Tytherington.

A new prize this year, Most Creative Nursery, sponsored by Brewin Dolphin, was awarded to Hilltop Day Nursery.

Highly Commended Awards, also sponsored by Brewin Dolphin, went to: Hannah Scott of Hollinswood Childcare; Lydia Daniels of Chelford Village Pre-School; Hugo Rosser of Terra Nova School; Raffaela Agger of Nursery Lane Pre-School; Lucy Grimley of Alderley Day Nursery; Ruby Peacock of Chrysalis Day Nursery; Wilson Rogers of Poppies Red Cross Day Nursery; April Taylor of Kids Unlimited Tytherington; Beatrice Watson of Chrysalis Day Nursery; Emily Preece of Chelford Village Pre-School.
